Madison has a decades-long tradition of honoring its history and preserving its river-city legacy for future generations. With its extensive National Historic Landmark District nestled between the Ohio River and 400-foot bluffs, it exudes charm and elegance rarely seen in small towns today. The city has been heralded as the quintessential 'American city,' and featured in Hollywood movies. Madison’s art and music scene includes nationally recognized creators and Grammy award winners. Community leaders cherish their long tradition of stewardship, and the visual presence of the downtown exemplifies that stewardship. Historic Madison, Inc. is a critical catalyst for the preservation of vital landmarks and community revitalization. As the organization prepares for a transition in staff leadership, the board of HMI is looking for a leader who will continue that legacy.
The Executive Director is the chief executive officer of HMI/HMFI and is responsible for the overall strategic, programmatic, financial, and operational management of the organization. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides visionary leadership, ensures the effective implementation of the organization's mission, and cultivates strong relationships with stakeholders, including the board, staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in historic preservation, history, museum studies, non-profit management, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
Five to seven years of progressive leadership experience in a non-profit organization, preferably in historic preservation or museum management (or equivalent experience)
Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, financial management, fundraising, and operational oversight
Strong understanding of historic preservation and restoration, museum best practices, collections management, and historical interpretation
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and public speaking skills with a proven ability to lead and supervise staff and volunteers
Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders
Passion for historic preservation and the mission of the organization, familiarity with the local community and its history is a plus
Proficiency in relevant software and technology, including Google Workspace, QuickBooks, Donor Perfect, Adobe, Canva, social media, website maintenance & development
Ability to perform moderate physical work, including lifting up to 25 pounds, walking across uneven terrain, and climbing stairs or ladders as needed for property inspections and event setup
Historic Madison, Inc. (HMI) is a 501(c)3 charitable non-profit historic preservation organization founded in 1960 dedicated to education, promotion, and assistance in preservation and restoration of historic resources which protect our heritage and enhance the quality of life in Madison, Indiana. Historic Madison Foundation, Inc.(HMFI) is the non-profit supporting organization for HMI founded in 1991. HMI & HMFI share the same board of directors and officers. HMI is staffed by 3 full-time professionals supported by 6 part-time staff and governed by a 16 member board of directors.
The organizations owns, operates and maintains ten historic sites/museums including award winning restored properties like the Shrewsbury-Windle House National Historic Landmark and the unique Schroeder Saddletree Factory Museum, the only restored saddletree factory in the US.
Historic Madison also spearheaded the National Historic Landmark designation for the Madison Historic District and was the host organization for one of three Main Street Pilot Projects.
HMI has received the Servaas Award for Organizational Excellence, and the Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration, both awarded by Indiana La...ndmarks, the Victorian Society in America National Preservation Award, the Daughters of the American Revolution Excellence in Preservation award, and multiple awards for the Schroeder Saddletree Factory restoration, including the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the American Association for State and Local History, the State of Indiana and the US Department of Transportation.
Other restorations of note include the 1850 African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Dr. Hutchings Office and Museum and the Francis Costigan House, home to Indiana's leading pre-Civil War architect.
