POSITION: Assistant Professor of American History Stetson University seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of American History with expertise in the post-Civil War United States. Candidates with specialization in African American History are strongly encouraged to apply; other areas of interest include the History of Science/Medicine/Technology, Public History, Military History, and/or U.S. in the World (excluding Asia and Latin America). This is a full-time, 9-month position beginning in August 2025.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D. in History, American Studies, or a related field by August 2025. The successful candidate will have an active scholarly agenda and demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduates in both general and specialized areas of history.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The annual teaching load includes five regular courses and one student-centered immersive experience (equivalent to one course) as a part of the University’s experiential, contemporary, and integrative learning initiative – Hatter Ready. The successful candidate will participate in the mentorship of student research and offer both lower and upper-division courses in their area of expertise, while participating in our vibrant American Studies, Africana Studies and General Education Programs, including First-Year and Junior Seminars. Stetson’s Department of History (https://www.stetson.edu/artsci/history/) takes a rigorous, interdisciplinary approach to undergraduate liberal arts education. Our faculty are also committed scholars with strong publication records and a broad range of international and linguistic expertise.

Stetson’s College of Arts and Sciences (http://www.stetson.edu/portal/artsci/) is the largest and most diverse of the University’s colleges and schools; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts. With nineteen academic departments and nine interdisciplinary programs, the College is the liberal arts core of the University. A great strength of the College is its faculty of approximately 140 full-time teacher-scholars. The College offers 31 undergraduate majors and 34 undergraduate minors; seven graduate degrees are offered in Education, Counselor Education, and Creative Writing. Every undergraduate major requires a senior research project, allowing students the opportunity to design and carry out independent research under faculty mentorship. THE COMMUNITY: DeLand is a picturesque residential community of 38,000 located 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando. The area offers extensive cultural as well as recreational activities.
