About University of Washington Department of History
The University of Washington Department of History is a highly accomplished community of teachers and scholars. Our expertise spans the globe – from the Pacific Northwest and the United States to Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa – and extends across human history, from ancient and medieval times through to the early twenty-first century. Many of us are engaged in teaching and research projects that examine the myriad ways in which religion, ethnicity, race, class, and gender have shaped the patterns of human experience. Faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students in the History Department also collaborate on a wide variety of digital history initiatives focusing on diverse thematic, geographic, and temporal areas. The Department of History, which offers degrees both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as opportunities for interested members of the wider community to attend courses as "Access" students, is among the largest at the University of Washington, with more than forty faculty members (six holding joint appointments with the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies and one with the Department of American Indian Studies). His...tory Department faculty have received the university's distinguished teaching award more times than those in any other unit on campus. We pride ourselves on the diversity of our faculty and the broad range of our course offerings and research projects. We aim to build a sense of intellectual collaboration among members of the department's learning community and strive to create a climate of inclusion for students, faculty, and staff.
