Business and Economics, Public History and Memory, Social History
4 Year Degree
Hodgson Russ LLP, a regional law firm with two hundred attorneys in eight offices, is seeking a professional, experienced writer of history, preferably (though not required) with interests in business, economic, urban, social, and local history, to complete the story of a prominent Buffalo law firm, using documents and transcribed oral interviews archived at the firm and available on-line. The project, estimated at 6 months of full-time work, entails writing the history from the 1960s, constructing a chronology while revealing important themes, including, for example, the problems posed by a difficult local economy; business development beyond Buffalo; the culture of the law firm; the role of women and minorities in the firm; changes in the firm client and lawyer bases; the effect of technological advances; the firm’s locational decisions (regional and within Buffalo); the firm’s place in the communities it serves; changes in lawyering and staffing; efforts to deal with the Covid-19 crisis; and, in general, how the business of law has changed over these decades. This history, which will be privately published, should be both substantive and entertaining. Guidance and support from those with knowledge of the history of the firm will be available throughout the project. A substantial paper and on-line archive (including historical documents and interviews) has been created. A Western New York resident is strongly preferred. Project must be completed within 6 months of start date, which should be as soon as possible. Compensation negotiable.
