The Montana Historical Society, publisher of Montana The Magazine of Western History and Montana Historical Society Press books, seeks a dynamic and talented person to direct its Publications Program. The Publications Manager works with a staff of five to produce the quarterly journal and at least two MHS Press books per year as well as other MHS publications.
Responsibilities include conceptualizing and developing projects, acquiring and editing manuscripts, overseeing program budget and staff, grant writing, representing MHS at scholarly meetings and public events, and sustaining strong relationships with professional historians, history enthusiasts, and scholarly publishers. Candidates must have excellent editing and writing skills, experience in personnel supervision and budgeting, and extensive knowledge of western American history and its historiography. The skills needed for this position ordinarily would be acquired minimally through a master’s degree in western American history and five years’ experience in scholarly publishing.
